The earliest known printed recipe for the Manhattan was published in O. H. Byron's 1884 Modern Bartenders' Guide, which cites two versions: one made with French vermouth, the other with Italian.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Rye whiskey
  • 1 oz Carpano antica formula or sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 1 Maraschino cherry to garnish

Tools

  • Pint glass
  • Bar spoon

How to Mix

  1. Fill a pint glass with ice
  2. Add the rye, vermouth and bitters and stir well
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe
  4. Garnish with the cherry
