Product Description

This was the first beer in our Ancient Ales series. This sweet yet dry beer is made with ingredients found in 2,700-year-old drinking vessels from the tomb of King Midas. Somewhere between beer, wine and mead, Midas will please the chardonnay and beer drinker alike. For years, Dogfish Head has worked with biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern to bring Ancient Ales to life. For more on Midas Touch and the experience of Penn Museum excavators as they uncovered the tomb of the legendary King Midas, read this essay from Dr. Pat.

Drizly Expert Notes

Dogfish Head Midas Touch was the first beer created by this off-centered brewery within their series of “ancient ales”. A recipe seemingly as old as alcohol itself, it is a 9% love affair between beer, wine, and mead. It makes sense that such a wild concept for a beer would be put together by the master brewers out of Milton, Delaware who have a penchant for the bizarre. This is certainly not a beer for the person looking for something run of the mill, but rather a slow sipper for the pensive collector of tastes. Pour Midas Touch into a ceramic mug if you have one and think about life 2700 years ago somewhere in Mesopotamia, or just grab your favorite wide rimmed glassware and get ready for exciting flavors like you’ve never had before. The beer pours a golden yellow with lively carbonation creating a light white head and a truly exciting aroma. Intriguing notes of green melon, white grapes, and yellow honey are at the forefront, showcasing the sweetness of mead and wine before the bitterness of beer. The flavor has a slight biscuit flavored backing, but is dominated by hints of muscat grapes, sunflowers, and blonde honey. The beer is undoubtedly sweet up front, but finishes with a pleasant dryness. Dogfish Head Midas Touch is a fascinatingly bizarre beer meant to be enjoyed in similarly odd situations. Enjoy a glass a masquerade ball, toasting to great archeological discoveries. Share a six pack with friends upon the completion of co-writing a book on the mysteries of echolocation among bats. Or you can always pour a glass with dinner, pairing it with a rich risotto or a pan roasted chicken breast.
