Product Description

Flanders Red is an acidic, sour ale with an initial impression of tart cherries and sour candy that dissipates into a complex palate displaying both a sharp lactic sourness with a backbone of caramel and biscuit malt profiles and minimal hop character. The dry, wine-like finish accentuates the complex malt profile and bright fruit notes showcased in this brilliant red colored hybrid of a modern Flanders and German-style sour.

Drizly Expert Notes

Destihl Wild Sour Flanders Red is not only a gratifying example of the classic Belgian-style sour ale, but it is one of the very few opportunities to enjoy such a beer from a can. A Flanders Red, sometimes known as a Flemish Red, is one of the oldest styles of beer still made today. Stemming from Belgium, this dark, malt forward beer is an amalgamation of the malty English brown ale style with the farmhouse sour beers of the Belgian countryside. Aged for an extended period of time with a variety of probiotic bacteria, the beer takes on a bracing acidity, balancing with the rich malt from the wonderful European malts. While this beer comes in a can, it is designed to be enjoyed from a snifter, tulip, or even a wine glass. It pours a copper reddish color with a dense off white head. The aromas on this beer are very different from the more common beer styles like the IPA or pilsner. Notes of cherries, aged balsamic vinegar, black plum skins, and brown sugar all shine at the forefront, accented with hints of an earth lined, musty cellar. The flavor is similar, showcasing deep flavors from the reddish malts. Dark fruits such as bing cherries, cranberries, and plums provide a sweetness to the beer, but the bacteria have certainly made this a truly sour beer. Don’t be confused into thinking there is a hint of tartness, the beer has an actual acidic sourness, and it is fantastic. It is a beer meant to be sipped and savored, hence the wine glass over the can. Destihl Wild Sour Flanders Red is a beer that can certainly be enjoyed anywhere and the can makes that easier to do. It’s nice to live in a world where this traditionally elitist style of beer can be had without spending a fortune. Still, it is a beer meant to be pondered and sipped slowly. Pour yourself a can to go with a home cooked Friday night meal with your loved one or enjoy clinking matching wine glasses filled with this luscious red liquid over Sunday brunch. The elegant flavor and sourness pairs well with rich duck confit and roasted potatoes, creamy gnocchi, or a slice of New York cheesecake.
