Layne Vineyard is a beautiful, older site nestled among hills and oaks in the Applegate Valley. It was planted by Roger Layne in 1975 to Cabernet Sauvignon and grafted to Tannat and Malbec in 2009. The vineyard currently is grown by Roger & Cameron Layne under the guidance of Herb Quady. Sitting around 1,500 feet in elevation, which is actually very similar to many Tannat growing vineyards in Irouleguy, the Tannat and Côt were picked when the acid was bright and the sugars moderate, and whole clusters pressed directly. The juice was allowed to brown by oxygen and then racked into neutral barrels for fermentation. Spontaneous fermentation took place over the next eight weeks, the wine was racked into a stainless steel tank and cold settled, filtered and then bottled on January 17th 2016.
