Chios mastic (Mastiha), known from the ancient times for its beneficial and therapeutic properties is the aromatic resin from the trunk and the branches of the mastic tree (Pistachia Lentiscus var. Chia), which is a bush that can only be found in Southern Chios. The mastic appears like a tear from the carved parts of the tree and flows in drops to the ground. It has been appreciated since the antiquity not only for its special scent, but also for its therapeutic properties. Furthermore, it has been scientifically proved that Chios mastic can act beneficially against disorders of the digestive system, can contribute to the oral hygiene, can have an important antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action and it is a natural antioxidant, while it helps in wound healing and in skin reconstruction. One of the greatest products of the mastic is the “Liqueur Mastiha of Chios”, which is produced traditionally in Chios Island since 1925 from the K. Psychis & Sons distillery and it is a product of distillation of the original Chios mastic. Especially after it has been enshrined in the community legislation, our traditional Liqueur has great potential of success in the international market. The founder of Psychis distillery realized very early the importance of Chios mastic. Therefore, one of the first spirits he had produced was the Mastiha Ouzo by distilling at the same time anise and natural mastic. Later on, inspired by the demand and the customers he experimented in producing the Mastiha Liqueur by distilling the mastic crystals into natural mastic spirit and so he created the Premium Liqueur Mastiha Chios Psychis, an authentic designation of origin. Nowadays, the third generation follows the well hidden family recipe which passes from one generation to another, collects the mastic in its own organic farms between August and September and distills it in its traditional copper stills. From the spirit of natural mastic comes the finest “Liqueur Mastiha Chios Psychis” that encloses in its flavor the whole history of the island… The local tradition demands that the Chios mastic liqueur Psychis should be served with dessert, after each meal or with coffee. Today, the mastic liqueur Psychis is an excellent choice for consumption as a shot, always frozen, or even as an aperitif served in a wine glass with crushed ice!
