Domaine Chandon's history begins in Champagne, France with the founding of Moët & Chandon in 1743. Now known as one of the prime houses in the region, the name Chandon reminds us of history and longevity. In 1973, Robert de Vogüé with John Wright saw an opportunity in the vineyards of California to experiment with traditional method sparkling wines. With the first vineyard site in Mt. Veeder and with property in the cool climate of Carneros, Domaine Chandon began production.
Focusing on traditional Champagne grapes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the goal was to blend the winemaking of the Old World with luscious California fruit. Domaine Chandon is now headquartered in Yountville and their Brut sparkling wine exemplifies the estate's philosophy in the bottle.
With cool climate sites, the Brut Classic continues to give an Old World steeliness and acidity with elegant brioche notes. The fruit rounds out the bottle nicely and is reminiscent of meyer lemon, apple and apple skin. The wine's balance of ripeness and acidity along with its traditional Champagne notes of dough-y bread make this a perfect complement to nuts, creamy Brie, and salty oysters. The blend consists of the three classic grapes and showcases what this old historic house can produce using the traditional winemaking of France with the cool climates and grapes of Northern California.
