Danish barley was destined to become the essential ingredient in our beer. Harvested, quality checked, and cared for, the resulting malt is the essence and importantly, the only grain used to make Carlsberg premium quality malt beer. Hops provide the spice in beer and the hop plant is grown solely for its use in brewing. After the passing of his father in 1835, J.C. Jacobsen starts brewing and travels to Munich and back to Denmark to perfect his lager brewing techniques and yeast choice. In 1847, Jacobsen founds Carlsberg and continues to modernize and improve upon his practices. Soon after in 1882, his son, Carl, opens up a brewery under the name, New Carlsberg, and shortcut his father's brewing process in half, much to J.C. Jacobsen's disapproval when sales of New Carlsberg surpass Old Carlsberg (the original). After much contempt and struggle between the father and son, the two eventually resolve their differences before J.C. Jacobsen's death in 1886. The two breweries later merge together under Carl's leadership in 1906.
Staying true to its roots, pair Carlsberg with Danish cuisine like, smørrebrød (assorted toppings on rye bread open face sandwich), pølse (Danish hot dog topped with pickles, fresh and crispy onions, ketchup, mustard, and Remoulade), or frikadeller (fried minced meatballs).
