Drizly Expert Notes

Bell’s Porter is a great beer for anyone with a palate that trends towards roasty, dark beers. Brewed in the heart of Michigan, this take on the classic English-style dark ale is a prime example of the age old style. Originally coming to fame in pubs of London and the British countryside, porters are a wonderful style that showcase the flavor that can come from the use of dark roasted malts. While people can sometimes be frightened of a beer the color of midnight in the rural mountains, porters can often be much more approachable than a bitter IPA, perfect for the beer lover or the beer novice. Bell’s Porter pours a deep brown color, nearly completely black, totally opaque, topped with a small tan head like icing atop a German chocolate cake. Bringing your nose to the glass will access big roasty tones. Burnt coffee rinds, charred barley fields, dark cocoa powder, fruity espresso. The flavor is equally bold with hints of dark chocolate, roasted walnuts, and toasted dark breads. There is a subtle bitterness from the earthy hops, but the general flavor of this beer comes through from the well rounded malt bill. It’s an ideal beer for lovers of big cups of coffee with a side of bittersweet chocolate. Porters may seem like winter beers due to their dark complexities, but Bell’s Porter is wonderful all year round. Pair a six pack with a day of throwing horseshoes in the yard or tossing darts in the garage. Enjoy a bottle with a seared steak sprinkled with a bit of bleu cheese. Try a glass with a bowl of ice cream and a slightly over-baked chocolate chip cookie while watching a horror film late at night.
