FAQs

Hard soda is simply an alcoholic beverage — sometimes even a craft beer — that’s made in the same style as a soft drink. Other names for hard soda include adult soda, fermented soda, flavored beer and alcohol soda, all of which get to the main point: it’s soda with alcohol, sweetened with cane sugar. Most hard sodas are simply carbonated drinks mixed with beer, providing a unique flavor that’s not unlike a cocktail mixer you might create at a minibar. As such, hard sodas are a relative newcomer in the category of craft beers, and there’s a lot of room for creativity.
Hard soda can come in a variety of flavors, but your average can is likely to taste like a brown ale that’s been supplemented with just the right amount of natural cane sugar. The dark ale’s spirit is there: caramel, malt, bitterness. And then on top of it is that soda-like layer of sugary sweetness plus something else, a spice perhaps, something that adds a subtle finishing note to the flavor. Of course, your experience will vary based on which hard soda you try, but generally, you can expect the complexities of a beer plus the fun of soda.
Hard sodas tend to range between 4 and 8% alcohol by volume (ABV), putting them a bit higher than your average beer, which weighs in around 5% ABV in most cases. Hard sodas tend to have a lighter body than most beers, but they are processed in a way that doesn’t reduce the alcohol content too significantly. Some of the most popular hard soda flavors include lemonade, cherry, orange and root beer, though you can find varieties in a huge number of different flavors.
Hard sodas go well with lots of different foods thanks to the wide range of flavors they offer. For instance, if you’re drinking an orange hard soda, try pairing it with poultry. Orange hard soda’s citrusy sweetness complements most treatments of chicken, particularly when it has been marinated. If you’re going with hard sodas that are heavier on the brown ale flavor, try pairing them with meats like lamb and steak, as well as roasted vegetables.
The highball glass is the glass of choice to enjoy a hard soda. This skinny tumbler is the go-to for tall cocktails that contain a significant amount of alcohol-free mixers (such as soda). It’s perfect for filling with ice cubes and keeping your drink fizzy. A highball glass often gets confused with a Collins glass. These two are quite similar, but a Collins glass is taller and skinnier. Just so you don’t get options paralysis, both are great choices for hard soda.
On average, you can expect a 12 oz. serving of hard soda to have 192 calories and around 28 grams of carbs. Compare that with your average 12 oz. glass of beer, which has 150 calories and 13 grams of carbs, and you can see that hard soda charges a higher fee for its sumptuous pleasures. But think of what you’re getting in exchange: delicious malted goodness, pure cane sugar, flavors ranging from lemonade to orange to cherry to root beer and beyond. Also — those 28 grams of carbs are significantly less than you’d get in a 12 oz. can of Coke.

Drizly's take

Not Your Father's® Root Beer has a subtle alcoholic taste and a 5.9% ABV to give it a balanced and smooth character that appeals to craft beer enthusiasts and nonbeer lovers. The alcoholic root beer is sweet with spicy and silky tasting notes. In a glass, the drink pours like soda, forming a deep brown, almost black color. It's fizzy and forms no crown. This Small Town brewery root beer hits the nose with herb and spice flavors, vanilla being the dominant hint. Drink the hard soda straight from the bottle or serve it in a pint glass within temperature ranges of 50 to 55° F to get the most out of the flavors. The aromatic flavors impressively complement most barbecue dishes and marinades. You can also pair the family beer with dried fruit and dessert dishes, including vanilla and caramel.
