Helles lagers are beers offering a bit of a sweeter palate to balance a good chunk of spicy German hops that give a crisp, clean flavor and bitterness, which some have dubbed "the ultimate well-balanced beer." They are often on the golden side - in fact, “helles” means “pale in color."
Helles lager can be a tricky one if you don't speak German. While some folks tend to pronounce it "hells," as in "what in the nine hells is this delicious beer," the actual pronunciation is "hell-us".
Typically, these beers land somewhere between 4% and 6% alcohol by volume.
Helles lager beers are a bit sweet to balance out a hefty dose of spicy hops offering a slightly bitter finish, making it a nice pairing with lighter dishes.
