      All about light lager

What does a light lager taste like?

As the name suggests, light lagers are lighter than other lager beers and, in many cases, they also have a lower alcohol content. To create such a light flavor, brewers use large quantities of cereals like corn and rice. These light-bodied beers have a low malt aroma and low hop bitterness for a very delicate and refreshing flavor. Like American-style lagers, these lagers are the drink you'd choose during a hot summer day when you're exceptionally thirsty but don't want to imbibe anything fancy. You can perceive hints of fruit and bread, thanks to the yeasts in the beer, as well as a grassy fragrance.

      Food pairings

Light lagers pair well with equally light foods, like chicken, soups, salads and fresh cheeses, such as mozzarella. However, you can also try them with spicy foods with vinegar or pepper as the light flavor of the beer won't overwhelm the strong flavors of the dish. In addition, they taste delicious with burgers, corned beef, roasted, smoked, or grilled meats, ham and white fish.

      History of light lagers

Lager beers were born in Germany in the 19th century, and Americans started to drink and love them immediately. However, importing beers from Europe was costly, and barley didn't grow well on American soil. For this reason, brewers in the United States started to replicate the flavor of a lager beer using corn, rice and other cereals instead of barley. The result was the exceptionally light flavor we now know and love in American light lagers. These light beers became particularly popular after the Prohibition era when, because of previous alcohol bans, the consumers were not drinking strong beers anymore. Today, there are light lagers from Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands and other countries.
