Product Description

In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California's first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique brewing heritage.

Drizly Expert Notes

Sometimes you just need a well made, proper lager from one of the oldest breweries in the country. Anchor Steam, out of San Francisco has an excellent one, and that is their California Lager. This beer is 4.9% ABV, and is the epitome of beauty in simplicity. It is only brewed with 2-Row Pale malt (the most basic and abundant malt used in brewing, keeping the flavors uncomplicated. It is only brewed with one hop, and that is Cluster hops, known for their easy going and versatile floral notes.

Anchor Steam uses a unique process of open fermenting and letting their beers krausen (basically a fancy word for letting it ferment not in big closed off fermenters you see at breweries) for their lagers, which is a proprietary process. Lagers should be incredibly clean and easy to drink. Anchor Steam's California Lager is exactly that.

This is a beer that has a lovely floral hop aroma, and finishes very dry. Which is exactly what you want with a lager and a beer like this. You don't have to think about it, just drink it! With a beer this low in alcohol, food pairings are infinite. Drink it ice cold, and this will be your new favorite Coors Light alternative. After all, it is time to grow up a bit. Hot dogs, chips and salsa, and anything that you'd be eating where you want something refreshing like Anchor Steam's California Lager to wash it down with.
