Think of bock beer as lager with a twist, because bocks don't have the pale straw color, mellow ABV or even-keeled flavor you might expect. Developed in the northern German city of Einbeck hundreds of years ago, the style migrated south and with it picked up the nickname "ein bock," or "billy goat." There are various substyles that are variations on the theme - doppelbock, eisbock and maibock among them.
Bocks are bigger than typical lagers in all things - stronger flavor, darker color, and a higher alcohol kick reminiscent of its adopted namesake the billy goat - if a typical lager is around 5% ABV, expect a bock to be 6-7.5%.
Traditional bock beers are all-malt brews, so expect them to be on the sweeter (maltier) side. You'll still have some balancing hops, but it likely won't be the predominant flavor, lending a balanced sweetness and toasted or nutty flavors.
