Product Description

Allagash White, the classic Belgian witbier (wheat beer), gets an American spin with this lightly golden and inviting brew. The nose is fruity and floral, yet it also comes off as warm and spicy. The taste is a delightful treat: heavy wheat mixed with banana, coriander, hay, honey, lemon zest, and pepper. The finish is rather dry, but it keeps that flavorful mouthfeel right to the mellow, creamy end. Some newcomers to the witbier approach may be shocked at the cloudiness of this beer, but the suspended yeast means that this beer is true to its parent style. Compared to most Belgians, Allagash White has a low alcohol percentage. Serve in a chilled tulip-style glass.

Drizly Expert Notes

Allagash White is a modern classic take on the Belgian-style wit (wheat) beer. Brewed in the small city of Portland, Maine, Allagash was one of the very first American craft breweries to bring this style of beer to glasses at our local bars and restaurants and it continues to be one of the best examples of the style in existence. A cloudy wheat beer at heart, the depth of flavor in this beer come from the use of dried orange peels and coriander seeds in the brewing process, adding citrus and spice to each sip.

Drink this beer the Belgian way, pour it into a branded Allagash stemmed tulip shaped glass and witness the hazy, white ale as it fills every inch, capped by a billowing white head. The nose on this beer is nothing short of heavenly. Wafts of orange quickly envelop your nostrils and are followed with just a hint of herbal spice from the coriander along with a bready quality given from the heft use of wheat in the beer. The flavor is a wonderful bittersweet with big hits of orange surrounded by a hint of citrus acidity, earthy spice, and cereal grain goodness. The wheat provides for a rich, full mouthfeel, cut sharply by the big Belgian-like carbonation. The overall effect is a perfect quaff.

Allagash White is a nearly perfect beer to pair with food. It's light and citrus flavors pair excitingly with all sorts of seafood from steamed clams with a side of twice fried French fries to raw oysters with a bright mignonette. It can be a wonderful pairing to a simple plate of pasta topped with garlic and butter or a piece of grilled chicken in a lemony vinagrette. Enjoy this astounding white ale all summer long while enjoying the sun beams and good tunes, but don't be afraid to give it a shot for a bit of warmth on a cold winter day as well.
