Bell's Two Hearted Ale has reached a level in brewing excellence that should put it into a hall of fame, if there were one. Coming from Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this IPA has been bringing that hop forward flavor that we have recently come to obsess over for nearly thirty years. Brewed with 100% Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest, balanced with a sturdy midwestern malt backbone, and named for the Two Hearted river in Michigan's upper peninsula, it's a beer made for and destined to be a part of your next adventure.
As with any great IPA, if you want to experience the pinnacle of greatness, you should pour your beer into a glass; Bell's recommends a fat, nonic pint glass that will allow the aroma to drift up towards your nose as you lean in for a taste. The beer is golden with just a tinge of haze topped with a thin white head. The aroma explodes with classic American hop character. The centennial hops have a lemony zing, bursting with grapefruit rinds and orange pith, followed with whiffs of freshly fallen pine needles on a damp forest floor. The flavor is similarly delicious, packed with huge hoppy punches of bitter citrus and floral pine, but with moments of sweet, caramelly malt that counterweight the flavor, making it hard to resist.
Bell's Two Hearted Ale is a fantastic beer to pair with food and with life. The big hop flavor stands up tall to the funk of bleu cheese, so try it with something fun like a bleu cheese stuffed jalapeño popper or a grass-fed beef burger topped with a savory BBQ sauce and some cheesy crumbles.
