Harpoon IPA was one of the first IPAs to ever be brewed on the east coast and is now embedded as one of the all time greats. Originally thought up as a seasonal concept by the creative minds at this Boston located brewery in the mid '90's, it quickly become a massive hit with local beer drinkers, driving them to make it one of their flagship beers. A bit of an amalgamation between the more classic east coast, English-style IPA and the more aggressively hopped flavors coming out of the Pacific northwest, it's really no doubt why this beer gained so much notoriety with craft beer lovers over the years.
Great right out of the bottle, but always recommended to be poured into a fat English-style pint glass, this beer pours a clear golden yellow, something similar to a bottle of sunshine. The nose is spot on for this somewhat hybrid style. Rich, bready and toffee notes can be whiffed, likely coming from the specialty malts that were chosen for the beer, but the sweetness is balanced out with those earthy hop aromas of the English and noble hops. There is a final hint of grapefruit skins that most definitely comes from the generous dry hopping with the west coast classic, Cascade hops. The flavor is smooth and special. There is a sturdy malt backbone, rich with light caramels and toast, balanced with a hint of citrus zest and finishing with that perfect, dry bitterness that we have come to love in our IPAs. The mouthfeel is full and sweet, yet delicate and dry. Stunning.
Harpoon IPA is a wonderful IPA to pair with food given its delicate balance between sweet malt and bitter hops. Give it a shot with crispy skinned salmon and a wild mushroom risotto or something more simple like a grilled bbq chicken sandwich smothered in swiss cheese and avocado. Enjoy a pint at your next dinner party, at a neighborhood bbq gathering or while watching your team pitch a perfect game.
