Flying Dog Bloodline Blood Orange Ale is a fruit forward take on the American-style hoppy IPA from the bizarre minds of the guys who put the words “flying” and “dog” next to each other back in the 1980’s. Founded in Aspen, but currently brewing out of Maryland, the bright minds at Flying Dog brewery have been making fantastic beers for over 20 years and this newer rendition of an old classic style is certain to be a favorite for a long time coming. Creating with fruit forward hops like Citra and Galaxy, they add a huge extra dose of citrus character by adding blood orange zest and blood orange juice as the beer is brewed and fermented. The result is awesome.
Certainly enjoyable right out of the bottle, but poured into a glass is when this beer can shine brightly. The beer pours a clear light amber color billowed with a white head. As the lively carbonation creeps up along the sides of the glass, the aroma escapes into the air, refreshing all that surrounds it. The obvious notes are from the addition of the natural blood orange components. Huge wafts of orange zest and bright orange juice pop out of the glass. The fruit forward hops just double the intensity adding hints of grapefruit and lemon zest, pine and tangerine. The flavor is simply wonderful. Juicy IPA to the next level with magical orange flavor combined with just a very slight caramel sweetness from the malts. This is definitely a hop forward beer, but with more fruit than ever before.
Flying Dog Bloodline Blood Orange Ale is a great beer to enjoy with food. The orange and grapefruit make it a perfect pairing for lighter proteins like roasted turkey breast with mashed potatoes or a nicoise salad made with fresh caught ahi tuna. Enjoy a six pack at your next football viewing or sip one down while frolicking through your garden.
