Drizly Expert Reviews

Goose Island Sofie is a Belgian style saison brewed with citrus peel and aged in wine barrels. Goose Island Brewery was the first American brewery to age a beer in bourbon barrels in 1992, with the highly acclaimed Bourbon County Brand Stout. Brewers often experiment aging saisons and wild ales in barrels previously containing wines or spirits. The aging process can vary from three months to a year, and even up to three years. The beer is not meant to taste heavily of the wine or spirit previously in the barrel, but picks up the subtleties and nuances in the aroma and taste of the oak, wine or spirit that was used.

This saison pours an orange, slightly hazy, with a big, fluffy, pillowy, white head that sticks around for some time, and has has medium carbonation. The aroma of Sofie is tart, pear, spice, citrus and orange. The taste is tart, with white wine notes, spice, pear and orange. The mouthfeel is medium with a great complexity of flavors. Overall this is a sophisticated, tart wine barrel-aged Belgian style saison from Goose Island Brewery.

Goose Island Sophie is for seasoned Belgian beer drinkers. The Belgian beer aficionado will enjoy the bright, tart, complex flavors of Sophie. This beer is on the pricey side due to the skill, labor and time it takes to produce a beer of this quality. It can be tucked away in your cellar for a special occasion, or perhaps a weekend. Sophie is a beer that should be enjoyed in small groups, or with someone special, who can participate in reflecting on the beauty and nuances of this delightful saison.
