    All about Zima

The ’90s are back with a vengeance, and in spirit, brewing giant MillerCoors re-released Zima for a limited time. A malt beverage that hit shelves in the early 1990s, Zima evokes the same nostalgia as Jolly Ranchers and the Mickey Mouse Club. It’s a clear, low-alcohol (5% ABV) beverage with just the right amount of fizz. The original Zima was a citrus-flavored cooler sold in six-packs. MillerCoors invested nearly $40 million in the product launch, creating one of the first websites for a food or beverage product. The unique name, meaning “winter,” inspired a commercial campaign in which actors would alter words to start with the letter Z.

After a handful of rebranding attempts, Zima lost much of its popularity in the early 2000s but remained a fixture in Japan. Especially popular among Japanese men, the Zima line expanded into several more flavors, including Zima Pink, a cherry blossom-flavored version.

In 2017, when Zima was introduced to the millennial generation, MillerCoors relied on its original fanbase, partnering with stars from Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210. The re-launch created industry buzz, leaving many to wonder if the Zima comeback was here to stay. In a market saturated with easy-to-drink, fruity coolers, perhaps Zima was simply ahead of its time.
