    All about Victoria Bitter

Australia’s most popular beer, Victoria Bitter, is one of those legendary brands known for its vintage ad campaigns and quirky anecdotes. The original 1860s malt house was said to be guarded by hundreds of cats, tasked with keeping the rats away from the precious grains. Founder Thomas Aitkin, a Scottish immigrant to Australia, named the beer for his brewery’s location in Victoria Parade. By the time Aitkin passed in the late 19th century, he left a successful brewery to his son that was quickly growing in popularity throughout Australia.

Victoria Bitter has a distinct brown bottle with a stubby neck, designed for easy handling and freshness. By the late 1980s, Victoria Bitter was a national brand, further buffered by Australian celebrity John Meillon. When Meillon passed, the company continued to use his prominent voice in their ad campaigns, rather than finding a new spokesperson — like the distinct bottle and logo, Meillon’s voice is yet another example of the brand’s commitment to its roots.

Even the recipe has hardly been tweaked over the many decades. Using Australian hops and pale malt, Victoria Bitter is a strong-flavored beer best-served ice cold to combat the warm climate. The 4.9% ABV product balances the toasty sweetness from the malt with the harsh bitterness of the Australian hops, creating the country’s signature brew.
