Stone Brewing has a short but colorful rock n' roll history. It all began in 1989 when two self-proclaimed beer nerds, Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, met at a Los Angeles rehearsal studio. Years later, the two ran into each other at a "sensory beer" weekend class at UC Davis and could not, for the life of them, figure out why the other seemed so familiar.
They soon puzzled it out. After many deep discussions (over brews, of course) regarding the plight of the American beer drinker being subjected to fizzy yellow water of poor quality, they decided that opening their own craft brewery was the only option.
The beer fanatics managed to put together the funding and their humble 30-barrel operation took flight in 1996 at a nondescript Solana Beach warehouse. Their flagship beer, Stone Pale Ale, quickly spawned several other offerings. Arrogant Bastard Ale truly put Stone on the map, eventually splitting into its own line — Bastard Brewing.
Today, Stone Brewing is the largest brewery in Southern California and among the top 10 biggest craft brewers in the entire country. They're famous for flavorful, hoppy, intense brews that sport alcohol levels higher than most. Stone handcrafts serious beer for serious beer drinkers.
