If you're browsing our beer selection and aren't sure what to get, the name Smuttynose is sure to catch your attention. Smuttynose was founded in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1994 when sibling craft brewing pioneers acquired a short-lived microbrewery on the edge of town.
The brewery is named for Smuttynose Island, one of the islands that make up the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. Once a notorious scene of a double ax murder, Smuttynose Island is now a wind-swept haven for seagulls and harbor seals. Despite the island's turbulent past, the name Smuttynose is fitting for a craft brewer anchored firmly in New Hampshire.
Today, Smuttynose beer is distributed in nearly half the States as well as in Asia and Europe. It all started with the brewery's Shoals Pale Ale, a copper-colored beer that's pleasantly hopped with a balanced yet tangy fruit flavor. Beer reviewers have likened Shoals Pale Ale to the flavors of freshly-baked bread.
Other classic brews from Smuttynose consist of the Rhye IPA, Pinniped Special, Old Brown Dog, Really Old Brown Dog and Finestkind IPA. Seasonal and rotating selections include Peach Short Weisse, Smistletoe and East Coast Common. Crack open a cold one and honor New England's beer-making history.
