    All about Schlitz

The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company was established over 150 years ago, and their all-American, light beer can still be enjoyed today. Joseph Schlitz was a German American who worked as a bookkeeper in a local Milwaukee tavern. After the tavern owner died, Schlitz took over the tavern, even marrying the former owner’s widow. Joseph Schlitz capitalized on nearby Chicago’s national distribution hubs, and thus, an American brewing legend was born.

After a few decades of misguided advertising, Schlitz remains a staple among midwestern states. Once one of the largest brands in the United States, the Milwaukee-based company was purchased by Pabst Brewing Company in 1999. Today, the marketing leans toward a hometown nostalgia, employing vintage ’50s-era designs, retro bathing suits and cans of Schlitz pictured temptingly with burgers and fries.

The Schlitz lager recipe uses a blend of hops, but it doesn’t overpower your taste buds. Schlitz is affordable and delivers more complex flavors than similar American beers made in the same style. Even so, it maintains its drinkability. At 4.6% ABV, you can enjoy a few without catching too much of a buzz during the Big 10 football game. Schlitz is golden in color and full of those wholesome midwestern grains you crave when cracking open an American lager.
