A gold medal winner at the 2016 World Beer Cup, Rainier is a classic American lager. The original beer has just 4.6% ABV but maintains a rich, malty taste. The beer, founded in 1878, was first created by Andrew Hemrich in Seattle. Hemrich hailed from a long line of German brewers, and his brewing company became a major success throughout the Pacific Northwest. While the brand’s popularity ebbed in the mid-20th century, it found renewed glory in recent years thanks to a strategic partnership with Pabst Brewing Company. The Rainier brand and its signature logo (a bold, red ‘R’) remain a trademark within the region, often emblazoned on bucket hats and outdoor gear.

Rainier lager was the staple product for decades, but new brews were released in recent years, including a Pale Mountain Ale and a light version of the classic lager (just 110 calories). In addition to its social media presence, the Rainier brand expanded its reach to younger drinkers by releasing a Pacific Northwest-inspired line of hard seltzers. These seltzers are available in three flavors (Huckleberry, Apple and Lemon), these seltzers are just 90 calories without any added sugar. In 2020, Rainier released its own gin as well. Distilled in Seattle, the Northwest Style spirit features huckleberry, juniper and spruce.

The Rainier brand appeals to young and old alike, catering to the region’s values around nature and craftsmanship. The quirky marketing is equally symbolic of the Pacific Northwest’s unique culture and flair. It’s no wonder the brand has been around for nearly 150 years.
