All about Lion Brewery (Sri Lanka)

Hanging like a teardrop off the southern tip of India is the island nation of Sri Lanka, a tropical gem of incredible beauty — but most importantly, the home of Lion Brewery. This beermaker has been brewing masterpieces since the 1800s. Its brewery was initially built by an Englishman named Sir Samuel Baker, who, like many British explorers of the period, found the cool temperatures of the country’s central highlands more amenable to not dying of heatstroke. And so there he was, hunting game around the city of Nuwara Eliya when he came upon a gorgeous waterfall and natural spring.

Baker might have just snapped a photo, but Instagram was a ways off, so he instead decided to build a brewery at the site. Thus was born Lion Brewery. Originally, the idea was to cater to tea growers in the mountains, but the success of their beers soon scaled them upward enormously. Baker’s original recipes are still used today, even as the beer’s production has moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Colombo. So whether you’re a bigger fan of their lager, stout or strong beers, you’ll be enjoying the official beer of Sri Lanka.
