About Dos Equis
Dos Equis beer was first created by German immigrant Wilhelm Hasse after moving to Mexico in the late 19th century. It would be nearly 100 years before his product arrived in the United States, but by 2009, Dos Equis was one of the fastest-growing imported beers to the country. Heineken owns the Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery, which makes Dos Equis and other successful Mexican imported beers.
Dos Equis products are lagers, or beers made using a fermentation process through which the yeast settles at the bottom and is then filtered out. Their brews are crisp and amber, best served cold right from the fridge. The most popular Dos Equis beer is the Lager Especial, a pilsner brewed with specialty hops, though the brand’s original product was actually a Vienna-style lager called Ambar Especial. The line has since expanded to include lagers infused with Mexican-inspired flavors like salt and lime, cucumber, watermelon and pineapple. You can also sip on the brand’s latest edition to the family, ranch water. These hard seltzers are available in lime, spicy grapefruit, mango and blood orange.
The marketing strategy is what really makes this beer stand out. Their spokesperson from 2007 to 2016, better known as the ‘Most Interesting Man in the World,’ would sip Dos Equis while demonstrating his adventures. The brand continues to use humor in its advertising efforts, making hilariously false claims about the beer’s history and even collaborating with the Funny or Die production team.
