Inspired by the Belgian beers he sipped while backpacking through Europe, John McDonald founded Boulevard Brewing Co. in 1989. Craft beer wasn't exactly popular in Kansas City during the late 1980s, but his determination to make beer for beer lovers drove McDonald to bring his dream brewery to life.
Boulevard Brewing Co. took off much more quickly than anticipated, and over nearly 30 years, it's grown from a 35-barrel brewhouse to a 150-barrel brewhouse. The brewery is still nestled in the heart of Kansas City, where it specializes in wheat beers and pale ales.
With almost a dozen ales and lagers available year round and a long list of seasonal beers and limited releases, Boulevard has a brew for everyone. Get a taste for this brewery's roots with the Pale Ale, Boulevard's original beer and a well-balanced pale ale that has a smooth, fruity flavor. The Unfiltered Wheat, an all-American wheat beer, and the KC Pils, a classic malt beer, are other must-try brews.
You'll also want to check out the Smokestack Series, known for its bold, complex flavors. Sip a Bourbon Barrel Quad, a barrel-aged abbey-style quadrupel, or toast a special occasion with a Whiskey Barrel Stout, which boasts notes of chocolate, vanilla and whiskey.
