For over two decades, Atwater Brewery has strived to honor the history of the centuries-old Bohemian lager that has pleased the palates of just about every beer drinker on the planet. Atwater's home in Detroit, Michigan, is an apt one. While most folks associate this city with automobiles, it was once home to more breweries than anywhere else in the country.
Atwater got its start in 1997, setting down roots in the historic Rivertown district with equipment made by Kaspar Schulz, the world's oldest manufacturer of brewing systems. Homebrewer and auto aficionado Mark Rieth purchased the brewery in 2005, quickly expanding its product line into more offbeat offerings that soon took top awards at the World Beer Cup competition.
Having expanded into several Michigan locations, Atwater Brewery still holds true to their roots. They craft boutique ales right alongside classic German lagers and have even opened distribution into Deutschland itself. The American craft beer craze has hit Europe like a tsunami, and Atwater intends to ride that wave.
