Ballast Point's Grapefruit Sculpin is a terrifically citrusy take on this favorite IPA hailing from San Diego, California. If you are a fan of regular Sculpin (which is no regular beer in its own right), and are curious to enjoy it with an extra dose of pulpy goodness from your favorite breakfast table fruit, this is the beer for you. Original Sculpin is one of the most popular west coast style IPAs of all time, bursting with citrusy hop character. The owners of Ballast Point, having roots deep in homebrewing weren't happy enough with the original and wanted to create something even more unique, more exciting. The result of continuous small batch experiments to somehow improve upon the award winning west coast IPA, the fruity flavor and hop intensity packs a punch.
Poured into a classic pint glass or enjoyed straight out of the bottle, the beer is a clear golden color, or one could even say oro blanco, like the skin of a juicy yellow grapefruit. The aroma hits you right in the face with the intensity of fresh squeezed grapefruit, complimented by citrus forward hops, begging for a sip, and for a pool. It's an overload of that Sunday morning lounge all day in your pajamas feeling. The flavors follow sooth. Grapefruit attack the palate, but is balanced by the classic blend of west coast hops that create hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon rinds along with just a bit of that forest-like hop bite.
