Amstel Light is a European light lager worth seeking out if you are a fan of having a few less calories in your brew without sacrificing flavor. Stemming from a Dutch brewery founded way back in 1870 on the edge of Amsterdam, it was actually named for the Amstel river which was also used for refrigeration back in those early days. Since that time, the master brewers have adapted their recipes, modernized their techniques, and perfected the light bodied lager. Coming in at a cool 3.5% abv, the Amstel brewers aren't attempting to add loads of adjuncts into their beer in order to maintain a higher alcohol content, rather, they are using quality ingredients for a full flavor.
Pouring a crystal clear straw yellow in color with a small white cap, Amstel Light is a pretty looking beer. The aroma has notes of grass, earth, and nuances sweet grains as the beer is pulled close for a whiff. The flavor is much fuller than expected from a light lager. The floral hops blend astutely with the cereal grains and pleasant sweetness derived from the carefully malted barley and cold lagered yeast. The mouthfeel is light with a gripping carbonation, ideal for the style. Overall, a really satisfying lager with some great history behind it.
Amstel Light is a great beer to have on hand for your next cocktail party, allowing your guests to escape from a heavier bodied beer or a strong drink without needing to give up on flavor and quality. Pair a six pack with a world class soccer game viewing or with a backyard cookout on a Sunday afternoon. Try it paired with a nicoise salad or grilled chicken thighs and charred greens.
