Like a lot of New England towns, Haverhill has tons of small-town charm sleeping alongside its nifty proximity to a... major metropolitan area. This little city’s undergone a bit of a Renaissance of late, with its gorgeous old factories being converted into ritzy, state-of-the-art condos and apartments. There’s a lot to check out from the windows of such places, for Haverhill is a history buff’s buffet. The land was purchased in 1642 from the Pentuckets for a price that would hardly buy a latte today: 3 pounds, 10 shillings (ignoring inflation here for dramatic effect). Gristmills, sawmills, tanneries, shipbuilding and woolen mills soon populated this little hamlet on the Merrimack River. By 1913, one in every 10 pairs of shoes in the U.S. was made in Haverhill. Flash-forward nearly four centuries and Haverhill is still rolling. Admittedly it’s a lot hipper than its Puritan progenitors might have hoped for — and much to their chagrin, Drizly is here to add a bit more razzle-dazzle to the Queen Slipper City.
