Alright, Urbandale — you’re not urban, and you’re not in a dale (which supposedly means “valley”). What gives? Situated 10 miles west of downtown Des Moines, the city of fewer than 46,000 extends from the tight suburban feel of its eastern edge to the near-wilderness of its open western border. There’s a lot of open space to enjoy in Urbandale, but perhaps that’s a luckier thing than it might appear. A century ago, Urbandale had just been incorporated and had around 300 people living in it. By 1950, that number had only climbed to 1,777. However, by the year 2000, the town had over 29,000 people and seemed destined to turn into a city in its own right. It didn’t, at least not in a bad way. Urbandale continues to maintain a small-town feel even as its population climbs.
