Tucked between Irvine and Santa Ana lies the city of Tustin, California, known by locals as the city of trees.... That has a ring to it, doesn’t it? Not exactly a repellant — and it’s not false advertising, either. Tustin lies draped over green hills with 360° views of the Pacific Coast and Saddleback Mountains. Tustin was once full to the brim with citrus groves, and its population of 80,000+ can still visit the last remaining citrus grove in Citrus Ranch Park. The founder, a fellow named Columbus Tustin, spent a good part of his later years trying to get the town a spot along the Southern Pacific Railroad. However, Santa Ana won out as the railroad’s southern terminus in 1877, leaving poor Mr. Tustin to die with disappointment in his heart. However, he needn’t have fretted — Tustin was so full of flowing spring water that the town soon became a major agricultural hub. Speaking of citrus, you know what goes it well with? Beer.
