The history of Montebello is a romantic tale of early California. Franciscan Missionaries set up a Mission, as it were, in 1771 at the current site of San Gabriel Blvd and the Rio Hondo River. A trifecta of ranches eventually made up the small town, and in 1847 this little spot was the scene of some pretty gritty fighting. Mexico and the US staged a final armed conflict to claim California — a skirmish known as the Battle of the Rio San Gabriel — and decidedly put the west coast in the hands of the Yanks. Today, Montebello is known for having the perfect climate, plenty of parks and some gorgeous mountains on its northern tip. Palm trees, great food, views over the valley and a 15-minute commute to LA...it’s got the California dream on lockdown.
