Blood Orange Scotch & Soda

Blood Orange Scotch & Soda

Blood Orange Scotch & Soda

  • scotch
  • Level: Medium
  • Prep: 10 min
Sick of blood oranges yet? Me neither! The slight bitterness you get from simmering down the peel/pith plays really nicely with smokey scotch. And I'm already anticipating (read: DREADING) the blood-orange-less days soon to come. I'm ready to say goodbye to winter, but not winter citrus!

Ingredients

  • 2 oz scotch
  • .5 oz rich blood orange syrup
  • .5 oz strained lime juice
  • .5 oz strained blood orange juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Club soda
For the syrup: slice one blood orange crosswise into 1/4 inch rounds. In a saucepan, combine with 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, 15 peppercorns and 15 allspice berries. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool, and strain into a jar -- store in the fridge until ready for use.

Tools

  • Champagne flute
  • Shaker
  • Ice cube tray

How to Mix

  1. Combine all but the soda in a cocktail shaker with ice
  2. Shake and pour over ice
  3. Top with club soda
  4. Garnish with a blood orange slice (mine are dehydrated!) and (for a touch of sweetness, totally optional) a cardamom sugar rim
